In the months of November and December of 2018, the library ran a survey about reading preferences in the community. This survey was intended to gauge what types of titles library patrons preferred to read and in what format. We had 228 patrons complete the survey and the results were enlightening.

Traditional readers will be happy to note that regular print fiction was still the most preferred material type with 69% of survey takers saying they used this format. 45% of patrons said that they read large print, 32% said they listen to audiobooks, and 24% read e-books. As you can tell, patrons were allowed to choose more than one response. Clearly, we have a lot of hybrid readers and listeners in town.

In fiction genres, Mystery was the clear favorite, with 62% of respondents saying that they read this type of book. Coming in second was historical fiction with 52% of respondents liking this genre and the bronze medal went to Suspense/ Thriller at 41%. Once again, respondents were allowed to choose however many subject areas they liked.

Non-fiction had some fun results. The most popular topic was history with 50% of patrons preferring this topic. Biographies had a 40% approval rating, and third place went to Cooking with 39% of patrons reporting that they liked materials on this topic.

Patrons were also asked who their favorite authors were. The most popular authors in order were: James Patterson, John Grisham, Stephen King, Nora Roberts, and Janet Evanovich. It looks like the members of our community sure like the best sellers!

Overall, this survey shows that our community is full of diverse readers and listeners who have a wide range of tastes from the 21% of the respondents who like to read magazines, to the 18% who read science fiction, to the 14% of readers who like poetry. The Henry County Library will continue striving to provide a wide range of materials so that we have something for everyone!
